Mayra Overstreet Galeano
Chief Medical Officer, Community Faculty, Adjunct Assistant Professor
MedNorth Health Center, Novant Health, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
I am committed to community-centered care and health equity, shaped by my upbringing in underserved communities in Nicaragua and Appalachia. After moving to North Carolina at 18, I spent nearly a decade with the Children’s Environmental Health Initiative, conducting research focused on environmental justice and child health. My clinical research experience includes collaborations aimed at improving patient recruitment and access to research for historically under-resourced populations, ensuring that studies reflect the diversity of the communities we serve. I earned my medical degree from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, completed residency at Oregon Health & Science University, and pursued a faculty development fellowship. I’ve returned to North Carolina to continue practicing in community health, where I find purpose in the outdoors and in service. My work integrates research, advocacy, and clinical care to empower patients and families to make informed health decisions, continuously learning from those I serve.
